So, what happens if he actually files retirement papers? Haven't seen any media outlet get into the specifics of Moss' situation. There must be some sort of time constraint on when you can unretire if you actually "officially" retire in the first place.

So do Logan Mankins, James Harrison, Osi Umenyora and a long list of other NFL players. Nobody calls them a petulant child. Shoot you can easily make the argument that Brady and Manning do as well. For whatever reason (probably due to the fact that people think they don't work hard), people feel comfortable calling out WRs for their actions but ignoring the actions of the other divas on the field.

Moss is just negotiating for the best terms and pretty much everyone agrees that he's making the smart decision. He'll likely do a bunch of other things that can trigger that repsonse, but calling him a petulant child who is throwing a temper tantrum is just a blanket statement about Moss and pretty much ignoring what is going on. The fact is it's a business move and it's the 100% correct one given his scenario.

I have no idea what Umenyora or Harrison have done, so I can't speak to them.  Mankins, I just don't believe either side enough to make a statement about, but if the stories I have heard are true, it is Robert Kraft who was acting like a child by demanding a public apology before signing a contract that was agreed upon.

This has nothing to do with WRs.  This has to do with a player who laid down on the Raiders when he didn't get his way.  Who laid down for the Pats, and kicked and screamed until they traded him, because they wouldn't give him an extension.  Now, he is in a position where no one wants to give him the contract he wants.  So instead of just waiting it out, and keeping his name in the ring, he decides to make the passive aggresive move to declare retirement.  He is taking his ball and leaving...until someone begs him to come back.

Not sure what Brady or Manning have done to be put in that company?

I believe it just means he's eligible to start the clock on his pension and HoF eligibility. Favre has filed his papers more than once  and you can rescind them at anytime if you like.

I don't think anyone is going to offer him enough money to come back. His personal financial situation sounds like a mess so if football is his best money maker at this point he has to come back eventually.

His finances are a mess? I'm searching for some corroborating evidence...I'd love to see this.

DISCLAIMER: The below post is coming second-hand from an individual whose brother in-law works in the Red Sox front office (he got me kickass Sox tix this summer at no cost so he is legit) and the guy in Boston is tight with the guys in the Patriots front office.  So here is the story that i just heard 5m inutes ago and please do not shoot the messenger but this is unreal.

Back in 2007 or 2008, Randy Moss invested $100m to be a partner in a NASCAR team and if anyone follows racing these days you know that the economy has taken a major toll on that sport.  The business was poorly run and Moss did not fully understand what it was he was getting into and the business is falling to pieces to where bankruptcy is inevitable.  Long story short.....Moss found out this summer that is is all but BROKE!  He went to Belichick himself asking for $6m on the spot and he would sign an extension.....Belichick balked or did not want to deal with it at the time. Moss then went upstairs to Robert Kraft (which explains yesterdays pre-game commraderie) asking for $6m to sign an extension which KRAFT AGREED TOI!  When Belichick got word of this he went to Kraft and threatened resignation if Moss was allowed to go over his head......at this point Kraft pulled back the offer and Moss went out desperately searching to go somewhere that would sign him to an immediate extension.

This man was extremely confident in his story which came from his brother in-law who is tight with the Pats guys and when you put all the bizarre pieces together it all begins to make sense.

Eagles creating a fantasy football team for this year, added Ronnie Brown today.  They are placing a LOT of faith in Michael Vick continuing to be an upper echelon NFL QB.

Another interesting little Moss tidbit a buddy emailed me today:

As it turned out, Patriots quarterback Tom Brady was one of the first to notice his decline last summer. A league source said Brady was so concerned about Moss' lagging work ethic that he discussed it with Patriots head coach Bill Belichick in training camp. When Belichick decided that Moss would be fine, Brady became even more agitated after Moss dogged it on a couple routes during an early-season win over Miami.

According to the source, Brady told Belichick during that contest that the team could keep Moss but the receiver wasn't going to be seeing any passes again. Moss was working in Minnesota within days of that conversation.

It's going to be very interesting to see how it plays out in Philadelphia. I really think they are going to rip up the NFC this year. The one thing that I thought was a huge weakness was at RB but Ronnie Brown certainly plugged that hole.

Yeah, its all going to come down to Vick.  Their defense should be very good (although its not like they added to an already great defense...their defense was pretty bad last year), and as long as Vick is focussed and healthy, they are going to be very scary.  However, I am not convinced Vick can remain focussed and healthy.

I also am curious to see how defenses deal with Vick this year.  I think his fading at the end of the year was mostly because of the rib injury he got earlier in the season (which is hard to avoid when you play the way he does).  However, I also would not be surprised if part of it was defenses catching up with him.

At the beginning of the season the book on him was heavily weighted towards his scrambling, and I would imagine that for the first half of the season (when he was absolutely dominant), defenses were essentially using gameplans based on the fact that he wouldn't stay in the pocket and pass, so when he actually did do that, there were a lot of open recievers, and not a ton of pressure on him, because defenses were more focussed on stopping him from running.  So, he was able to pick them apart with his passing.

So, I think at least part of his struggles later in the season came from the defenses adjusting to his new style, which caused him to regress to the norm, as teams closed some of the wide open passing lanes that were there earlier in the season, and dared him to beat them with his legs, which he was not completely committed to doing, for probably a variety of reasons (self preservation/already hurt, coaches telling him to stay in the pocket and not break the system).  So, when he did run, he wasn't quite as effective as he was in his first couple years in the league.

The wildcard though is having Young as his backup.  I wonder if they brought him in, almost to have a second version of Vick, so they can let Vick loose a bit more.  Maybe they will be less concerned with Vick getting hurt running, if they know they can plug in Young.  Young may be an idiot, but he has had some success in this league, particularly in shorter stretches, which IMO makes him a perfect candidate as a backup.  He seems to lose it if he is counted on for too long, but toss him in there for 4-5 games as Vick recovers from some bumps and bruises, and he could be very good.

No matter what though, the Eagles are going to be the most exciting team to watch this season.

Just got shit-talked by a Jets fans for the first time this season.  He said they're going to win the division (and frankly, they might).

That Pats-Jets loss was so catastrophic and the NBA was so compelling, that over the course of the last 6 months I had completely blocked out the searing, laser-hot hatred I have for that fucking Jets team.

Now that it's coming back to me I feel like the NFL is officially back.

I was just coming in here to ask Petula why the Skins are ignoring Rocky McIntosh but it looks like he just signed.

The AFC East rivalry between New England and New York is getting an added jolt as longtime Jets defensive end Shaun Ellis will join the Patriots, pending a physical.

Ellis and the Patriots reached agreement on a one-year deal, a league source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter. Terms of the deal were not immediately available.

Jets coach Rex Ryan addressed Ellis' departure Sunday.

"The fact that he chose them ... there's no way I'm going to wish him well," Ryan said Sunday. "There's no chance of that.

"I wish him to be healthy, but I don't want him to play that well. But he knows. I know the way he is too. He's going to be revved up, ready to go, and our guys will be too. So it will be fun going against him."

I like this.

Awesomesauce.

We'll see what actually happens, but I really think there's going to be some serious regression by the Jets. I can't wait to find out.

I assume Baker doubled-down on it since there was no HOF game this year.

It's on the NFL Network at 4 this afternoon. From what I have read, the key details are that Ridley and Price had big games. Ridley ran for something like 16 for 68 yards and caught 7 passes as well leading to 3 TDs. Not sure how his blitz pickup is which will go a long way to determining how much PT he'll get. Price made a catch in the back of the end-zone and also turned a short catch into a 50 yard gain. Price is sounding like the real deal and Brandon Tate's career in NE is in serious jeopardy.

Both quarterbacks were impressive. Dane Fletcher did an excellent job calling signals and running the defense. Hernandez fumbled twice.  Buddy Farnham is a PS guy but played both WR and DB and had an INT. I've seen mixed reports on Solder.

Outside of obvious veterans, Vereen and Tate both were out.

Note: these comments are from blogs and such and not my personal accounts as I haven't even seen it yet. Interested in anyone's perspective.

I am curious to see it.  I DVRed it last night, and will probably speed through it tonight.  I am really curious to see some of the rookies.  Particularly Mallet and Ridley.

If Ridley was really as good as people are saying, that could be huge for this team.  It would be really nice to see them get a guy who can run hard, but who also has some vision.  The Lawfirm has been great, but he really is not suited to be a featured back IMO.

As for Mallet, in college, he looked like the kind of guy who would do much better in a pro system, since he really is a prototypical NFL QB.  Big, strong, great arm, good pocket presence.  If he has a head on his shoulders, he could be a nice guy to groom behind Brady.  Its obviously way too early to know too much about him, but I am curious to see how well he is picking up the system so far.

I caught some of the game, although I was drinking a little and not paying too close attention. Hoyer and Mallet both looked good. Very good, actually. Ridley looks like a good all purpose guy. He didn't really look like a feature back to me, but it's hard to tell at this stage.

Dane Fletcher was in on a lot of plays on defense, it seemed. And it's good to see Leigh Bodden back out there.

The Raiders take Pryor in the 3rd round. Al Davis is such a tool.
